iCub - motionCUT

iCub - kinesthetic teaching on the iCub using force control

The iCub - The Robot Child

The iCub is the humanoid robot developed at IIT as part of the EU project RobotCub and subsequently adopted by more than 20 laboratories worldwide. It has 53 motors that move the head, arms & hands, waist, and legs. It can see and hear, it has the sense of proprioception (body configuration) and movement (using accelerometers and gyroscopes). We are working to improve on this in order to give the iCub the sense of touch and to grade how much force it exerts on the environment.

New life is being injected into the iCub platform through the development of force control. This new skill enables safe and gentle interaction of the robot with human teachers.

iCub grasping skills have been recently improved as a result of the Poeticon EU project. Simple actions such as grasping are combined through the use of spoken language tools developed by the Poeticon teams. In this example, the iCub pours cereals in a cup.

New visual skills of the iCub. Independent motion tracking for the iCub using optical flow. See how we can easily track objects or people that move independently of the iCub.

The iCub met the Italian President in 2010 during a visit to Genoa and IIT. Here the President is asking about the robot after receiving the latest IIT leaflet from the hand of the iCub.

The iCub was in Hannover in April 2010 as part of the Italian delegation to the international fair and exhibit. Here's interacting with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel while showing its movement coordination skills and software reliability. The iCub ran uninterrupted for three full days attracting thousands of curious visitors.

The iCub can be obtained from the Italian Institute of Technology for a fee (indicative prices are shown). We do not make a profit from this activity but nonetheless we strive to provide the best possible quality and first class support to all iCub owners. We need you for doing this even better!

The 914 PC-Bot

A robot designed for teachers, researchers, engineers and legacy system developers who need to front real-world applications and robotics projects with a digital face.

Designed to fit digital life, bringing data and processing to the point of human contact.

It's a host computer, it's a web server, it has GigaHertz or processing power, Gigabytes of Ram and 100's of Gigabyes of hard drive space...have fun!

About PC-Bots
Traditional mobile robots tend to fall into two camps - small, inexpensive platforms that require a host computer in order to program them - or - they are expensive and proprietary. These mobile robotics platforms are typified as automated toys running simple download programs performing repetitive and/or single applications to proprietary units performing relatively complex programs or jobs.

While all these units fit the scientific definition of a robot, they fall short of fitting the average person's mental picture of what a robot should be.

The 914 PC-BOT, by comparison, is a Personal Computer complete with inputs for keyboard, monitor and mouse. It is also visually stunning unit designed to evoke a natural attraction and engineered to meet the average person's idea of what a robot should look like. Not only that, the 914 PC-BOT is presented to the market as a richly featured researchers, advanced-technology teachers or system developers, robot engineered out of industry standard hardware and industry standard software

Robot joins UT recruiting team

The 914 PC-BOT is the first general service robot designed for digital life in the home, at work, at school and at play.

A robot framework that is familiar, supportable, maintainable and extensible - bringing data and process to the point of human contact.

Engineered almost entirely out of industry standard PC hardware and mainstream operating system software.

A visually stunning machine designed to evoke an emotional response and engineered to meet the average person’s idea of what a robot should look like.

For teachers, researchers, engineers or legacy systems developers who need to front real-world applications and robotics projects with a digital face.

So what does it do?

The simple answer is “just about anything you want it to do”.
It does everything a PC does, even has a monitor, keyboard and mouse adapter if you want to use it as a standard PC. It houses the same plug-and-play hardware as a PC does, accepts the same peripherals and drive bay options, runs the same operating systems that a PC runs – but - it's mobile and autonomous. In short it's a PC with microphone, speaker and web camera that has read-to-me, speak-to-me functionality but also offers, move-with-me or move-for me! This robust robot platform provides unparalleled expandability in terms of both hardware and software as well as being compatible with 100’s of off-the-shelf applications. It houses enough horsepower out-of-the-box to process video, AI applications, advanced algorithms, SLAM applications and more. It moves, talks, sees, hears, senses, smells and can physically react and respond to the environment it is placed in.

The PC-BOT can be easily configured to perform a myriad of useful and entertaining functions. All this within a stunning exterior design that has a universal ability to turn cold technology into a friendly, personal experience.
So the real question shouldn’t be “What does it do?” But rather “What can it do?”
Shipping outside Canada is not free for this item. RobotShop does not accept returns on custom orders except for warranty exchanges. A 20% restocking fee applies to any non-custom purchase returns.

Robot ASIMO 2012

Why Create a Humanoid Robot? The dream sounds simple. Design a robot that can duplicate the complexities of human motion and genuinely help people. An easy task? Not at all.

ASIMO took more than two decades of persistent study, research, and trial and error before Honda engineers achieved their dream of creating an advanced humanoid robot.

In 1986, Honda engineers set out to create a walking robot. Early models (E1, E2, E3) focused on developing legs that could simulate the walk of a human. The next series of models (E4, E5, E6) were focused on walk stabilization and stair climbing. Next, a head, body and arms were added to the robot to improve balance and add functionality. Honda’s first humanoid robot, P1 was rather rugged at 6’ 2” tall, and 386 lbs. P2 improved with a more friendly design, improved walking, stair climbing/descending, and wireless automatic movements. The P3 model was even more compact, standing 5’ 2” tall and weighing 287 lbs.

ASIMO is the culmination of two decades of humanoid robotics research by Honda engineers. ASIMO can run, walk on uneven slopes and surfaces, turn smoothly, climb stairs, and reach for and grasp objects. ASIMO can also comprehend and respond to simple voice commands. ASIMO has the ability to recognize the face of a select group of individuals. Using its camera eyes, ASIMO can map its environment and register stationary objects. ASIMO can also avoid moving obstacles as it moves through its environment.

As development continues on ASIMO, today Honda demonstrates ASIMO around the world to encourage and inspire young students to study the sciences. And in the future, ASIMO may serve as another set of eyes, ears, hands and legs for all kinds of people in need. Someday ASIMO might help with important tasks like assisting the elderly or a person confined to a bed or a wheelchair. ASIMO might also perform certain tasks that are dangerous to humans, such as fighting fires or cleaning up toxic spills.
